Good God it's been a long time...
Between stress at SG, oodles of wheels needing work and keeping up with my riding, the blog has suffered.
Bike Update: The Double Dribble is currently being pieced back together. The Fox fork needs some luvin but, other than that it looks good.
I rode today. 40 miles on the 29er, what was I thinking? Although that bike is a blast to ride, it was not built for the road. I ran my errands via bike rather than my car (Bank, library, grocery, coffee, bike shop, etc).
Tomorrow's ride looks bleak since I can hear it raining outside right now. MTB will probably be out of the question but, possibly a quick road ride.

Call me a sissy but, ...........(Not out loud Jackhole).....This ash in the air is doing nothing for my riding. I rode this evening after work and I was coughing up a lung. I think my Saturday ride is out until this air clears up or the Santa Ana winds die down.
So looks like tomorrow is catch-up day. I promised I would do an "Art Project" for a friend's birthday present (need to finish it), I have a bike that is squeaky (I have to find the noise), I have a wheel I need to finish and a House that literally needs to be flushed. Big day....
Maybe I'll ride Sunday (maybe being the operative word).

Let's see lot's of wheelbuilding, bike repairs, riding, bbq's and work have kept me from updating this thing. I recently received some products that I need to review. I got a new helmet from Spiuk, a steel frame from Masi and some Royale GT's from SockGuy (go figure). The frame isn't built up yet so no reviews of that but, I have ridden with the helmet for over a week now.
Spiuk Nexion:
The Nexion has a novel system for fastening called COMPACTFIX, with millimetric adjustment.
It comes with an insect-repellant anti-allergic treated net and a system to prevent the loss of the helmet in the event of a fall.
It weighs 290 grams and is available in 11 colors apart from the colors of the official helmets of the Illes Balears (UCI Pro Tour) and KAIKU (Continental) teams.
Each helmet comes with a detachable visor.
At first glance the helmet looks a lot like a Bell mid-range model but, when you pick it up and really look at it you realize the difference. 290 grams is very close to the weight of the Uber expensive Giro Atmos. The interior net system is strange when you first put the helmet on, when you think about it actually is a great idea. Not only to block bugs and foreign objects but when you need to clean the pads, you won't have to worry about losing one. They are attached together via netting!
The best feature is the design of the "CompactFix" system. It has bowed out arms to allow your sunglasses to slide under. So many times I have slide my Oakley's under the strap and caused a nasty headache. I also like the padded chin cushion on the strap (also available on the Catlike helmets, ironically also made in Spain).

So I updated my Blogger account to "Beta", yay? Different settings, different options, etc blah, blah, blah......
Well folks bikes keep rolling in and time keeps rolling by. Apart from work (SG & PBS) it's been quite busy around here. I got back from Interbike last weekend and fell back into my ride schedule.
Tuesday I went for a road ride after work, Wednesday I went on my night ride (Scott SG's new NSM went along), Thursday drinking with the guys and Friday I rode to work. This weekend was just as hectic; Saturday I went to Charlotte's wedding down in Mission Bay (Charlotte is SG's one woman art department). Let's just say I was dancing (If you can call it that) so you know there was drinking involved.
Today was all about cathing up on some repair projects I have been putting off. I am somehow glad to be back in the groove.

We're back from Vegas!
Although I didn't get to walk around the entire show I did get to visit with most of my "industry" friends and see some of their new stuff. First and foremost The Sycip Family were in full effect (Jay left Vegas Wednesday). Sam (The father of Jeremy and Jay) stopped by the SockGuy booth on one of his breaks. Somehow he remembered me from last year. He walked straight to me and said "you're the gentleman who has five of my son's bikes...". Matt and Jeremy also stopped by to say hello. I really wish I lived closer to Santa Rosa. I could've hung around their booth the entire show.
SyCip were showing a fully custom Javaboy including brazed on front and rear racks color matched to the frame. The hammered fenders were also powdercoated to match the frame. The bike featured Shimano's new touring group the "Alfine", internal gears, hydraulic disc brakes and Dura-aceish cranks.
Don't get me wrong! I love my Javaboy but this one takes it to a whole new level.

ChiChi townie bikes were aplenty yet again this year. Salsa had a new steel townie called the "Casseroll". I can't wait to see that in the lineup. Niner had a bunch of new bikes in their booth including their full suspension frame and
new color choice.
On the parts side White Industries was showing their adjustable BCD crank. You can use whatever size/tooth count chainrings you want and of course they are polished to a mirror finish.
Right now I have to catch up on sleep....More on that and the show soon.....

Will it ever end!.....Nope not a chance, thank god.
Bikes, bikes and more bikes...throw some socks in there and you have the life of Gyeager.
I have been working on a bike that I can't acknowledge I built, legally that is. You know who you are and when you win that next race I'll know I helped a bit.
Then there are the "others". They seem to take over my living space. The bathroom, kitchen and living room will never be the same.
I'm babbling. I have to finish one more bike tonight then I can sleep....

A couple weeks ago I had an amazingly good weekend. To start things off I went to the Roxy to celebrate a friends birthday. Good food, good conversation, good friends....
Saturday I was invited to a wedding for two people I have met maybe three times yet, I feel like I have known them for years. It was beautiful day for a wedding especiallyt a wedding on the beach. They had reserved a little park overlooking Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. Funny thing was someone had shown up hours before and set up their chairs and alter unfortunately for them that does not qualify for a reservation. Hence we poached! The ceremony was simple yet romantic. The reception was to be held at a friends house in Carmel Valley. Would it be able to accomodate 30+ party-goers? Oh, Yes. House isn't quite the word for this place, estate is more like it. This guy is living life! Two kickass cars in the garage including, 6 motorcycles, a bunch of bikes and an RV. The garage doors were high enough that he can fit an RV IN the garage......no to mention pull a car into the garage with bikes on the roof.

It sucks getting a flat on a ride....
It really sucks getting two flats on a ride being a mechanic caught without tools or tubes.
It didn't turn out to be the ride I wanted but, good none the less. I kept my heartrate low, 15 mph average and didn't cry once. That's a first.
I am jumping into the PBS mobile tomorrow afternoon and delivering my nephews new bike. I got him a 2007 Specialized HotRock 20". I had to wait a couple weeks for it but, it was worth it in the end. The frame is Aluminium this year! Sweet little bike. I rebuilt the bike from the ground up. Nothing but, the best for my clients......er family.

Tonight's racing was mostly Keirin. Although it's very challenging for the cyclist it's not as exciting as some races for the spectator. Nevertheless we stayed until the end and then routinely ended up at Lefty's Pizzaria.
It has been nutz around PBS this past couple weeks, 7 bikes a week has been the average. I've wanted to post but, finding "me" time has been rare.

Evomo "Epic Grind" T-shirt:
First and foremost I have to give props to BryanT from Evomo. He has answered what many people have questioned. Why are cyclists forced to wear Surfing or Motocross T-shirts when they don'y have to. Bryan, being a graphics guy, started Evomo to provide togs for the cyclist. Some of the shirts are subtle in graphics (Epic Grind, Splatter, etc.) and others are more in your face like "Blood Donor" or "Hurl".
How can you not love a company whose name translates to Puke? I have washed mine a couple times and they have not shrunk (which helps since I'm not shrinking either). All in all a good deal at 20 bones.
Their website is being maintained right now but, you can purchase them (after 8/14/06) from their website (www.evomo.com) as well as some of your favorite LBS's. I think I can speak for Bryan when I say "You should talk to your shop and get them in stock, they kick ass".
I have not been paid by the company, nor has anyone twisted my grimy arm to wear the T or even stuck a gun to my unwashed head of hair.

Man down....
The man known by many as DC (Big Jonny, Jon, etc.) was hit by a car Saturday. The man is resting in the hospital with multiple lumbar fractures and some road rash but, s in good DC humor.

(Medical personnel are preparing to move Jon from the stretcher to the bed in the ER)
FMS Staff: “Are you ready sir?
Big Jon: “Wait!”
BJ: “Ladies, I must warn you. I’m naked under here and extremely good looking”
(Nurse enters the room with water and cloth to give Big Jon a sponge bath and clean some of the superficial wounds)
Big Jon’s Wife: “Do you want help with that?”
Big Jon: “Hold on, are you going to do this? (Looks at wife and frowns)…Or are you? (Looks at nurse and grins)
Silence from both wife and nurse

Track Night Tuesday!
Although we got there a little late to see Missn' Out. We got to see alot of action in the Madison* race.
*The Madison is an event in track cycling, named after Madison Square Garden in New York, and known as the "American race" in French (course à l'américaine).
The race format is a variation of the points race. Teams of two (seldom three) compete, but only one rider needs to be racing at any stage. Periodically, the teams change riders by "tagging" their teammates, usually performing slingshot action with linked hands to transfer as much of their momentum as possible to the racing rider, though a team-mate may also be propelled into the race by a push of the rider's racing shorts. The non-racing team-mate then moves to the top of the circular banked track to recover before his next stint.
Team pairs are ranked according to laps gained or lost on their opposition and by points obtained by performing well in sprints which occur periodically during the race and are signalled by a bell on the preceding lap.
First there was a wreck in the field on one of the favorite teams (Matt Hoffman and Adam "don't know his lastname"). Matt had a huge gash in his quad and his shin looked like hamburger. Then towards the end of the race there was a huge sprint Shawn Wallace outsprinted the fastest 17 year old I have ever seen, Iggy!
We all (about 12 of us) met at lefty's for pizza and PBR. Good Times! If you are ever in North Park you have to stop by Lefty's and say hey to Dave.

I went to the track race tonight.....
Balboa Park, San Diego
I was amazed, the stands were packed! There are races every Tuesday and I definitely need to go down there again. "Missin' Out" was the best spectator race. The rules are as follows; The pack rolls out after two or three laps, the last rider across the line s eliminated until there are only three riders. Then the last riders have two laps. It's exciting to see someone break ground and sprint to the line just so they won't get cut. I can see how it wouldn't be the best race for the riders but, it's a hoot for the spectators.
After the races we headed over to Lefty's Pizza (Authentic Chicago Style)

There are reviews a plenty on the way....
I have been testing several products over the past couple months that I need to review and update. Are they going to start now? Hell No, did you see what time it is? 11:46pm... sleep is in my future.
Tonight's ride was spectacular! It was a small group of three and when I say small I mean the other guys collectively did not weigh as much as me. Nice pace, not super fast, we didn't stop much and we all rode the same speed. Super. It was Double Double.

Road trip time!
Cinnamon Star and I are leaving for our adventure in four hours! We are driving the slow road and hope to be in SF by noon. The Spicy party is at 6pm so we will have some time to checkin to the hotel (The Mosser Hotel), ride the cruisers and get some coffee. As you guessed I will be riding the Javaboy.
It will be a short Road trip since CS has to be back Sunday morning but, fun will be had. Pictures will be posted....

Kenny is a stud! Catches a pneumonia, drops several places, takes a 7 hour break then an 11 hour break drops to 9th place, hammers up one of the hardest climbs and now he is back in fourth place 7 hours behind Tinker (That may sound like a lot of time but, in actuality it's not that bad).

I have to get a new repair stand. My current stand (I bought it 11 years ago) is driving me nutz! After using it for a while the legs move which means the stand tilts, AH!
It's time for me to look at my options. I know what I want. It's on my list. Now, I just need to figure out how to get it. If anyone is thinking about a present for me here are the spec's.

In other news; RAAM started today for the Solo Enduro racers (including Kenny and Tinker). I will post updates as I receive them.

Keith Anderson is making frames again!!!
Well most of you do not know what or who I am talking about. I guess it's been 13 years or so since I ordered my first true custom frame. It was fillet brazed, hand filed and hand painted by Keith himself (although I think his wife painted the frames). Kieth Anderson was located in Indianapolis, IN when I ordered the frame but, by the time it was delivered he had moved to Moab, UT. My frame has a sterling silver Kokopeli headbadge that signifies the move. Originally I was going to have the frame painted a really ornate design but, decided on horizontal stripes of aqua and navy metallic with yellow decals. I love that frame. I think that's why after all these years I have never sold it. It has been built up as my only road bike, singlespeed, fixed gear, etc. It is now time to rebuild, breath some new life into it. Maybe it will be my commuter. I need another bike in my house right?

The Colonel, Legs, Pele, Uptown Shirt and I went to Fletchers Cove (Solana Beach) to see Hank 3 (Hank Williams 3) tonight. I am a sucker for any band with a fiddle and a slide guitar. Boy were there some freakshows at that concert. Between the guy projectile vomiting to "The Dude" (Big Lebowski) to the guy riding in on the pink furrry bike with matching hair and purse, there was plenty to watch.
Fo some reason they decided to close the beer garden early, bad move. We returned to the Colonels seaside apartment. After hearing some hillbilly music (reminding me of home) I stopped at the local "entertainment store" and picked up a twelver of PBR.

SG is thinking of purchasing a new POS (Point Of Sale) software package. The sales guy for the company, Mas90, took three of us to a company down the street from the new SockGuy HQ. As we rolled up to their warehouse I kind of remembered Geri's son worked for a golf company in the complex. Turns out it was the company he worked for. Not quite what I expected from the Gecewicz family, Matt was really quiet and reserved unlike his father.
Before we left one of the marketing vixens gave us some Ion bracelets. It's probably in my head but, I do feel more energized. We'll see how I feel on tomorrow's ride.

Our trip was eventfull some good, some bad as always. Flagstaff is a cool little town. Great little restaurants, bike shops a plenty, sidewalk cafe's and lots of entertainment. I need to make a trip out there again, maybe take my road bike as well.

SG has moved! It took a little over 12 hours on Friday tomove the office and the warehouse. That was the easy part, I am in the middle of the hard part now (organizing and consolidating the warehouse).
Thursday I am heading to Arizona for my annual MTB trip. Vanilla, Self-Toucher, Stubby, Geri, Goodwill and I are staying in Flagstaff for 4 days. Pictures will be posted when we get back (maybe during the trip since I will be taking the laptop).

Kelly Bike Company Calls It Quits
MAY 03, 2006 -- NEVADA CITY, CA (BRAIN)—High-end production steel frame manufacturer Kelly Bike Company is closing its doors.
The company will continue to take orders for any in-stock items until Friday, May 19. Those last orders are estimated to ship by Friday June 16, or once the last order is completed. Kelly will no longer take orders for any custom frame builds or assemblies and the entire business will be closed down by July 1.
“If a person wants that special color and decal combination, or the popular clear over decal upgrade, this will be the last chance to get it like you like it,” said Chris Kelly, Kelly Bikes founder. “After the last order is completed and shipped the operation will be dismantled and every last item will be sold including unfinished frames, tooling, equipment and raw materials,” he added.
Kelly will be auctioning a day-with-the-boss on Ebay to one lucky Kelly customer to allow them to finish off their own frame with help from the person that built it. “Of course if it looks like they are going to screw up the powder coat I’ll step in to help, but they will finish up their frame and follow me around the shop for a day,” he said.
I guess I know why BTI is out of Kelly forks right now.....
Kelly Bike Company Calls It Quits
MAY 03, 2006 -- NEVADA CITY, CA (BRAIN)—High-end production steel frame manufacturer Kelly Bike Company is closing its doors.
The company will continue to take orders for any in-stock items until Friday, May 19. Those last orders are estimated to ship by Friday June 16, or once the last order is completed. Kelly will no longer take orders for any custom frame builds or assemblies and the entire business will be closed down by July 1.

I have never seen this many bikes in my house at one time...
Luckily I am dropping off three tomorrow afternoon, whew. A client I haven't heard from in quite awhile gave me two frames to build up with three more coming next week. Maybe I will be able to catch up on some bills that I know are just around the bend.
Needless to say my house is a wreck. As soon as I recover from the bills I have a plan that will relieve some of the space stress. Other than that, I need to increase the business to be able to move into someplace larger or atleast with a garage. I do like my little house....
