Sweet jesus how did we find this hotel? It's miles from downtown Flagstaff, basically on the train tracks and is in the dirty party of town. The good thing is that we are next to the "Bun Hugger". No seriously, that's the name of the restaurant. Posted by Picasa

Classic....

Tuesday, May 16, 2006

SG has moved! It took a little over 12 hours on Friday tomove the office and the warehouse. That was the easy part, I am in the middle of the hard part now (organizing and consolidating the warehouse).

Thursday I am heading to Arizona for my annual MTB trip. Vanilla, Self-Toucher, Stubby, Geri, Goodwill and I are staying in Flagstaff for 4 days. Pictures will be posted when we get back (maybe during the trip since I will be taking the laptop).

Kelly Bike Company Calls It Quits

MAY 03, 2006 -- NEVADA CITY, CA (BRAIN)—High-end production steel frame manufacturer Kelly Bike Company is closing its doors.

The company will continue to take orders for any in-stock items until Friday, May 19. Those last orders are estimated to ship by Friday June 16, or once the last order is completed. Kelly will no longer take orders for any custom frame builds or assemblies and the entire business will be closed down by July 1.

“If a person wants that special color and decal combination, or the popular clear over decal upgrade, this will be the last chance to get it like you like it,” said Chris Kelly, Kelly Bikes founder. “After the last order is completed and shipped the operation will be dismantled and every last item will be sold including unfinished frames, tooling, equipment and raw materials,” he added.

Kelly will be auctioning a day-with-the-boss on Ebay to one lucky Kelly customer to allow them to finish off their own frame with help from the person that built it. “Of course if it looks like they are going to screw up the powder coat I’ll step in to help, but they will finish up their frame and follow me around the shop for a day,” he said.

I guess I know why BTI is out of Kelly forks right now.....
I have never seen this many bikes in my house at one time...

Luckily I am dropping off three tomorrow afternoon, whew. A client I haven't heard from in quite awhile gave me two frames to build up with three more coming next week. Maybe I will be able to catch up on some bills that I know are just around the bend.

Needless to say my house is a wreck. As soon as I recover from the bills I have a plan that will relieve some of the space stress. Other than that, I need to increase the business to be able to move into someplace larger or atleast with a garage. I do like my little house....

BBQ review:

Sunday, on the way home from the Bikes-n-Beer's ride, we stopped at a new BBQ restaurant for lunch. It's just off Ortega Highway close to the 5. The place is called "Bad to the Bone". I am ready to go back even though it's 45 minutes from my house.

The meat had great flavor and was very tender. The rolls tasted homemade and seemed to hold up well. The atmosphere was down home hillbilly style. This place is giving Joey's BBQ a run for the money.

If you are in the OC and hungry, definitely check this place out!
Bikes-n-Beer's... or BBQ.

For some reason I thought that ride was going to be an easy jaunt around town...wrong! MG and I showed up at The Path Bike Shop around 8:45. Suprisingly enough I was the only rider there wearing Pink Camo. The group (about 100 riders) left the shop around 9:30 and cruised down Irvine Blvd to Peters Canyon. It was kind of like Hodges, some fun singletrack, fireroads but nothing too technical. From Peters Canyon we rode down a paved path to Santiago Oaks. S.O. was killer! That place made the entire trip worth it. A great mix of singletrack, climbing (yes I said climbing), techy downhills and obstacles. It was a blast riding somewhere new let alone with 99 other riders.

Winston from The Path took some photos and a couple video's. If you get the chance download the video named Bike-n-Beers.

Here is a link to some of the photo's (a trained eye can pick out MG and I);

Ooops...

I just realized I scheduled a SS road ride and my SS is under reconstruction right now. Good thing there are only two other guys showing up tomorrow that have SS's. I call one and make the other cry when I show up on my geary...unless he reads this before the ride....

He deserves the handicap.

Tom Giblin's was packed this evening. Legs, the Colonel, 007, the Doc and I (a brief apperance of Mrs Daggs) drank many a fine brew this evening or is it last evening? Either, fun was had by all.

Bikes and Beers ride

The Path (the best bike shop in OC) is having there annual Bikes and Beers ride this Sunday! The ride normally sees 150 to 200 riders. It's an offroad/ urban ride and ends at the Tustin brewery for pizza and beers. The ride "starts" at 8:30 but doesn't really roll out until 9:30 or so.

I am planning on making it this year, pink camo and all.

Let me kow if you want to go, we can carpool.

Friday, April 14, 2006

I am starting to remember why I don't go to bars anymore....

There is always one guy that doesn't have a sense of humor and another that does. Say for instance you are watching four guys play pool. You are there with a bunch of friends. Everyone is paired up except for you. One of the guys playing steps up to you and says "you know someone might thinking that you are gay". You say thanks but, you are the one with the guy and have the "Gay" look. Funny thing is that he doesn't laugh it off like I did...I mean you did. In fact he made a point to call his so called "girlfriend". Anybody can call a random girl on the phone, that doesn't make her your girlfriend....tool. Insecurity is the root of all evil. Ironically I was wering my Evil t-shirt. I guess the asshole couldn't read.

I hate bars. I'm not drinking for awhile....now where did I put my beer? Needless to say I narrowly got myself beat down tonight. I know I can be an asshole once and awhile but, I am trying to change....yeah right.

I immediately had a starnge feeling about this flavor. I thought I knew what it tasted like so I let 007 try it to confirm or deny my thoughts. Yep, he also thought it tasted like Taco Salad, witha slight sweet aftertaste. Not good.

+Rockstar Juiced

This is the best tasting of the three tested during my 6 hour drive home after working the expo. Kinda Redbullish, kinda fruity and a little like a fruit smoothie. Excellent! I will but this one again.

+Redline

Run, do not walk away when you see this hell in a can. To quote my man Steve "This was made by, for and with assholes". Yuck! It tasted a little like watery Pepto (in fact it was the same color. I started getting the shivers, the back of my neck was on fire and I was twitchy. I recently found out that it was a "fat eliminator", hell I need that! What I don't needs is the side effects. No thanks.

Sea Otter:

What can you say that hasn't already been said? Rain? Yep SRAM Force road group? Yep Niner full suspension? Yep Orbea carbon 29er? Yep......etc.

What they can't talk about the backstage drama;

HR was out of control this past weekend. What I hadn't realized was that Sea Otter was a "No Fun Zone". Luckily Moses was with 007 and I, we had a blast! Moses is one funny mother-f-er. Not only did we make fun of every dweeb at the race we laughed at our own workers. Some people take things too serious. I could understand if our company was big (30 workers or more) but, we are just a small player in the world at 7 employees. We aren't changing the world here.

Well enough of the politics, here is what I was able to see in my short bursts of freedom during the weekend.

+Haro Mary 29er: I want one! The frames are made of steel, they come in SS and geared and are relatively low priced.

+Intense Spider 29er: Unfortunately I wasn't able to ride one but, the proto I was able to up close was spectacular! A 4" full suspension 29er? I'm in...if I needed another MTB that is.

+Kish: Kish was next to my favorite bike builder (guess who). Kish has several steel bikes at the show including a Javaboyish bike. Excellent welding and geat attention to detail.

+Niner: Niner was showing off their new full suspension frame. Gusseted top and down tubes, sweet BB linkage, light weighta and I am sure the price will be right. If the price is right, I may be breaking the streak and getting a Niner SS.

+Industry Nine: These wheels rock! The spokes are similar to the "M" words aluminium spokes. The hubs are King quality and you can pick what ever rim you want. The spokes and hubs are available in a large range of colors (some colors are extra $). I would be on the I9 wagon if I didn't prefer wheels by my own hands.

More later....including dinner stories, drinking stories...etc.

3-18 Review:

CROCS Cayman Sandal
Retail $29.99

First off, I know they look odd. I wanted something to wear after a long ride, chores outdoors, lazy Sunday's, etc.

My dad bought me a gift card to a local "Recreational Equipment" company. I had been looking for some slipons for awhile and noticed they offered CROCS. I received them Friday. Today, after the race, I wore them to wash my car, go to the grocery and walk around. They really are comfortable! They have more arch support than I was expecting.

The Cayman is meant to be alittle larger than your normal size. My foot seems like it is swimming in the shoe when I am sitting but, they are perfect when walking. They have a strap on the back that can be used or pushed to the front. So far so good!

I will be wearing them in more situations this week and report any and all reviews. Posted by Picasa

Longtime no hear....

Hmmm.... where to begin....

It's been really hectic around here lately plus, I haven't been around here lately. In summary form;

*Worked a Golf Expo for SockGuy last weekend (it was empty, the only good thing was I got a massage from CMC each day I worked). Cassidy's did the right thing and brought some lovely ladies....
*SG had a little get together for my birthday at PizzaPort
*Karen had a shindig at her house on Sunday.
*I stayed at the DeBoer casa (watching Elvis) while they were in Mexico.
*Two tune-ups this week.
*Appointment with Tax Guy (Ugh...Cost more than I thought it would but, I am glad they are done.)
*Worked the California Half Ironman this morning, fifth year in a row (4 tech support, 1 sag support).

Well, that's about it. I have two tuneups that I need to start tomorrow that are due this week, Two to pick up and one to deliver.

Busy, to say the least. That is a good thing... the bank account is looking bleak.

Until then...

There are too many cool things in this picture! To name a few; The Sweet Ti cantilevers, carbon fenders, Ti rack.... Posted by Picasa
Tech Tip #1

Have a mountain bike ride planned where there are lots of cacti? If you can't find sealant filled tubes I have an easy solution.

Find a suitable tube, preferable a new one that fits your size wheel. Buy a tube of sealant and a patch kit(there are several brands out there; Slime, Tru Goo, etc.). Poke a hole in the undeside of the tube (the side that will be on the rim not the tire). Insert the nozzle of the sealant container and fill the tube with the amount as directed by the manufacturer. Thoroughly clean the out side where you poked the hole and patch.

Unortunately you cannot buy pre-Sealed 29er tubes, so for the race I made some. Not only did I not have any flats during the race, I am still using the tubes and they are working perfectly!

Happy trails!
I think next time I ride Daley Ranch I might have to use the Subaru....

The place is completely sanitized! The ride was fun don't get me wrong but, the trails have changed for the worse.

I got my Ti riser bars in on Friday and installed them when I got home. They have a little more sweep than the raceface bars but, the work awesome plus they look killer.

With rides like that I wonder if I will ever ride 26" ever again....

I'm back!

Well, going into the race my goal was 5 laps. After all of us did our first lap I knew 5 was a little high. Let preface the situation; Our Team Captain resigned from our team to race with "The cool guys". So another rider who lost his team volunteered to join our team, only to find out at the race that he was racing on a two man as well. I am pretty sure he only did one lap for us. Our first rider "SB"* rode a 1:50 lap(including the run), the second rider "SDS" rode a 1:20, third "GY" 1:28, "ER" brought home a 1:15 and "SW" rode a 1:26.

*SB= Sarah Breyer
SDS= Steve Bacce
GY= Me
ER= Ed Radcliffe
SW= Steve Worley

The second laps were as follows;

SDS 3:00ish (2 flats), SW 1:45, GY 1:55, SB 2:00ish, SW 1:30ish and the last lap was a blistering GY with a 1:30. Unfortunately we didn't have anyone that wanted to go out again so I waited out on the trail until noon, so my time shows 2:02.

I was flying on my first lap. I felt awesome, the bike handled great and no mechanicals. I beat last years lap by over 20 minutes! My second lap was ugly. 1:30 in the morning is not my kind of fun but, I got up and pressed on. I am just glad it was under 2:00. I really wanted the last lap. There wasn't any pressure to get back before noon, I could cruise or work it. i rode really hard in the begininng and decided to slow down and have some fun, keep it smooth. This bike rails. In the middle of my lap I caught up to Roger L. from the Sycip Team, he was racing Solo SS. We talked for a few minutes then I let him go. We kept in contact though, he was spent from all the spinning on the course (that's the only way I could have kept up with him). Towards the end of the lap, a bunch of us stopped and waited for noon. I needed some shade so I cruised a little further. As I passed the solo pits, Dejay stopped me and passed me a beer. Mmmmm good timing. He was racing on team and sharing pit with the DC crew. Fat Tire on Tap, nice. I was in full "Watermelon"* so I was easy to pick out and I got several nicknames during the race.

* Full Watermelon= SockGuy Green camo bibs, armwarmers and Pink camo jersey.

I had a blast! I am really proud of my 3 laps. That is one of the best 24hour races around, Thanks Todd S.

Congrat's go out to my Team, we didn't need Jensy-pooh after all.

The drive home was ruthless...Both my passengers fell asleep and were out cold for 85% of the trip, thanks. Jensy would wake up long enough to poke me with his finger and ask me if I was awake then he would fall back to sleep, @sshole.

Race product review:

I tried several "Energy drinks" on the trip home. Some had good flavor, good source of energy, etc.

Full Throttle: Taste- Fruity Red Bull, Energy- iffy
Amp: Taste- Mountain Dew with Guarana, Energy- superb
RockStar Double caffiene: Taste- Red bullish, Energy- better than FT
Sugarfree Red Bull: Taste- Blah, This should only be consumed with Vodka.
Starbucks Frap: Taste- Not as good as the real thing and too much fat.

So that it for now. I am going to ride the 29er urban style this afternoon.

So you on the trail,

G

Man blogger has been freaking out lately....
I tried seven times last night to post but, no dice.

Old Pueblo is this weekend...yay. The "F"ing german backed out of racing with "his" team. He is the captain of the team, the got to guy, the registar, the one that got us together to ride..."Hey guys let's get a team together for a fun trip, I don't really want to race hard just get a few laps..." I call Bullshit. Plus the team he is going to ride for is going for the gold. Granted they are the "Brokeback Mountain Boys" and he goes for that sort of thing, just ask him about JK. Let's see I could be a dirty slut or a Gay Cowboy hmmm that's a hard decision. fucker.

Well either way I am going for five laps. I don't know how many of those will be in the wee hours of the morning but, never the less.

bike is ready, I on the other hand am not.

Went for a SS road ride this morning. Man I love that bike! Sure it's a bitch climbing but, it's a great workout. The Chicken Sympathizer, Stubby and Vanilla also rode. CS rode his Kelly 29er with cyclocross tires, while Vanilla and stubby were on their gearies.

I placed an order with UBI for my dropouts. I am really glad I found out about this issue now rather than during the race in the middle of the desert. The bike is begging to be ridden and it will be.....soon.

Next weekend will be all MTB rides. Check your mailboxes (if you are on my list) late this week for my ride schedule.

Selle San Marco Gus R:

Well, the first ride on the saddle is in the books. I had installed the saddle on my hardtail SS, what better way to test a saddle....

First off, The saddle is an inch and a half wider than my normal saddle. The saddle is also quite a bit flatter than my usual. It looks good though, a little too much like a DH trimmed down but very sleek.

While I do have a large posterior (aka Budunkadunk), the saddle is not the shape or size for me. The saddle had enough cushion but, the shape (very edgy) felt odd. There is also a seam for the different material on one side.

Roxanna Fitzgerald Cogswell
(Jan 28th, 1925- Jan 13th, 2005)

My grandmother died last night. When my mom called this morning I knew something was wrong.

In fact even though the COD was a heart attack, I think my grandmother knew when it was going to happen.....

I received a thank you card from her last week. Don't get me wrong she always talked about how old she was but, we never took her seriously. In the card she mentioned how "at least she saw Christmas". She didn't see her birthday though....

I believe there is a silver lining to everything. The silver lining to this is that my Mom and grandmother were talking to each other. They had an argument over twenty years ago that tore them apart but, in the last year or so they patched things up. I am happy for that. I know my Mom is sad right now but, she would be really upset if they were still arguing.

Goodbye Grandma....

I almost forgot. I am starting up a product review feature on this blog. Of course I will be reviewing the new bike and parts but, I will also be accepting products for review.

This week I received a saddle from a friend at Velimpex (the importer for Selle San Marco). The saddle is a Selle San Marco Gus R. The Gus is a DH saddle but the Gus R is Selle's XC edition. I have installed the saddle on my rigid SS for the test.

At first glance, you immediately notice the flatness of the saddle. The top of the saddle has definite ridges on the sides including a seam on one side. There is also a strange Titanium plate at the back of the saddle.

For some reason Blogger isn't allowing me to upload photo's but, I will when I can.

Review soon....
Finished another bike today! This one being for free but, I'll chalk it up to marketing. Tomorrow seems to be the only day I have free. Thursday is booked. Friday I am working the Carlsbad Marathon expo/ Birthday party for DW "The Card Shark". Saturday I am thinking Hodges since I am working the expo in the afternoon. Sunday........

Pinky's Rear derailleur, shifters, cassette and grips came in today. I am still waiting on the fork (coming from Maverick American), the brakes (I ordered them through B&L), saddle (Vanilla hasn't placed order yet) and most importantly the frame. To quote my boss "God Damn, God Damn!". Anybody need some work done on their bike or some new parts? I am going to have to ramp up business to pay for this beast.

Word to the wise.....

When you realize there is something wrong with your bike, fix it now!

Last week I rode my bike afterwork nothing hard, just a spin. Towards the end of the ride I was suffering up a hill and my chain came off. I looked down and the masterlink (It's a Mavic 10 chain) had come apart. I quickly inspected the link and it was pretty worn, not good. I snapped the chain back together and said to myself "I need to pickup a chain at the shop". I didn't and forgot about it. I guess that's one of the drawbacks to being a mechanic, your bike is always the last to be repaired.

Today I left for a much needed ride with some friends, not thinking about the link. About 20 minutes into the ride, just after a short climb the chain falls off completely. When I say completely I mean it. Low and behold half of the masterlink is gone! By the time I realized I was screwed, I called the front group and they were miles ahead. Fat Tim helped me look for the link for awhile but, I realized it was a lost cause. Atleast I was wearing my camo so everyone that passed by pointed and laughed. Good times.....

I am really angry at myself right now. I have decided to scrap the riding for today and clean up the casa.

Whew! Just finished a gem of a bike build. It's one thing to build new bikes. It's a completely different beast when some of the parts are old some new, most are greasey, grimy and some are missing parts. Not fun....

Well it's done so now I can look forward to the weekend. Poker night tomorrow, Road ride on Saturday and hopefully a MTB ride on Sunday.

Hope to see you this weekend.
Some more of the parts are on the way for pinky. I have even acquired a seatpost for it finally.

The casa is still a mess, the wheels are done and my parts for Pinky are starting to roll in. SG is gign to be rocking tomorrow. We have been closed for a week and the orders are aplenty. I will get them all out.....maybe.

Big Jonny over at DrunkCyclist has his store up and running. Checkout his new socks, T's and jersey's. I have had the socks since Interbike. They are tall boy's and look like old Basketball socks. Very pimp.

Link dump:
Portland Cyclewear: I finally followed up to one of my Interbike brochures. They make Custom Wool jersey's. I ordered one to see how it looks. If it comes out well I may offer them on the site.
Maverick American: I ordered an SC32 29er fork for my Pinky project. I can't wait to checkout this fork.
Fizik: Fizik just updated their website. They are offering more custom colors and offer more saddles in the custom program. Yep, you guessed it! I have one on order for Pinky.
Chris King 24mm: You can't have a SC32 without one of these. You can't have bling without King. To top it off it might as well be pink.

Busy weekend ahead....

I am meeting a client at the shop for some bike test rides. I need to build 4 wheels by Saturday night and I have to total up my Inventory numbers for SockGuy. My bicycle does not look to be in the cards this weekend.

Yikes! Something on my couch just moved....I think it is the neighbors cat but, I am not sure. PBS needs some cleaning. I haven't seen the floor in a week. I guess that is what happens when you are busy.

Have a happy holiday?

I rode the snot out of my bikes this past weekend. Went for an early morning cruise with the B&L clan Saturday, Sunday I rode Hodges (North and South) with The Chicken Sympathizer, Shaggy and Scooby. Monday the CS and I rode Goodan Ranch. Only one mishap and that was because I was pushing myself beyond my limit. I rode the Pave Tuesday and Wednesday alone.

This week is inventory time at SG (SockGuy for the newbies). We definitely do not need anymore Pink Flames or Low Cut Turtles.

PBS has a couple projects in the hopper;

1. The Super Unleaded is coming along.
2. LBT's Gunnar should be in soon and the first installment of his parts will be here on Monday.
3. I have a couple sets of wheels to build by Saturday. Fun, fun.....I'm serious.

Anybody have ride plans?

Happy Holidays From Pro Bike Support!

PBS.com now has internet access at home so the updates will be more frequent.

Project: Super Unleaded

The hubs are in and I will be building the wheels soon. The frame, fork and drivetrain is on order although I have awhile to wait on the frame. I will take pictures of the wheels when they are ready.

I hope to see you on a ride soon!
