The end of an Era.....

Duke Departing from Competitor Group

SAN DIEGO, CA (BRAIN)—John Duke, senior vice-president of print media at Competitor Group, will leave the company. After two years at CGI, and 14 successful years as publisher of Triathlete Magazine, Duke has decided to pursue other opportunities that will be announced at a later date.

“John has been a huge asset to CGI,” said Peter Englehart, president and CEO. “His lists of accomplishments are many, of course, but there are some highlights that stand out. When CGI purchased Triathlete, Inside Triathlon, Velo News, Velo Press and Competitor Magazine we tapped John to spearhead the transition of these titles under the Competitor Group umbrella. He did an outstanding job. Also outstanding is the legacy he leaves behind from his years at Triathlete and his love and dedication to the multisport world.”

Duke began his career at Triathlete in 1997 as publisher. Prior to Triathlete, he worked as a sports marketing consultant with Reebok and remains a partner with Multisports.com.

“I have truly enjoyed my 14 years as publisher of Triathlete,” Duke said. “Over the past two years I have met many new people through the integration of CGI's numerous assets. I have established friendships that will last forever, but feel I am at a point in my career where I would like to pursue new opportunities.”

Also, CGI has announced expanded responsibilities for Andrew Hersam, executive vice-president of media. Hersam will assume direct oversight of print, digital and sponsorship sales for all of CGI’s media and event properties. SVP John Smith will continue to manage CGI’s national sales force reporting to Hersam. In his expanded duties, Hersam will also add the responsibilities previously handled by Duke.

“Since Andy joined CGI in August, our media properties have already seen a lift in revenue, circulation and editorial quality,” Englehart said. “He merges tremendous credibility in the endurance sports industry with a track record of success as a publishing and sponsorship executive, making him uniquely qualified to lead all of our media assets.”

These staffing changes follow the recent promotion of Inside Triathlon’s editor in chief and former editor of Triathlete, TJ Murphy, who has been appointed editorial director for all multisport media publications of CGI. Brad Culp, editor of Triathlete and Susan Grant, assistant editor of Inside Triathlon, now directly report to TJ.

“TJ’s promotion is consistent with the Competitor Group’s commitment to be a home for top talent,” Hersam said. “A gifted editor and writer, TJ’s years as editor in chief of Triathlete and then most recently as EIC of Inside Triathlon have been marked by his fierce dedication to editorial excellence, ambitious storytelling, dynamic service journalism and pushing the boundaries of magazine design and photography.”

November 4, 2009; Oceanside, CA, USA: 100 elite victories. Wow. Brent Prenzlow raced to win the Prestige Series “Storm the Beach” cyclocross elite men’s race Sunday. Prenzlow races for Celo Pacific Bicycle Racing Team and B+L Bikes (www.celopacific.org). With a gap over Sho Air’s Pro Mountain Biker Sid Taberlay, Brent was again at the top of the podium. But it wasn’t just another win.

Saturday’s win was special for Prenzlow, who won his 100th elite men’s race in front of family, friends, and supporters, including his mechanic Gordon Yeager. The crowd was screaming and cheering for a man who loves ‘cross. His friends shook his hand, hugged him and his wife, and gave him a Belgian beer after the race.

It was also a special win for those of us who race cyclocross in Southern California, as we got to witness our top rider achieve such a major milestone.
Prenzlow says “he’s addicted to cross,” and loves to train and race. As a category one racer, Brent is a unique and talented athlete. He’s easy going and highly respected among his teammates and the other cyclocrossers. Brent has been racing cyclocross for fifteen years and was among the first key guys who started promoting cross racing in Southern California with the 5-race SoCal Cross Cup in 2002. That series has now grown into a much larger 15-event Southern California Prestige Series (www.socalcross.com). Brent has contributed to the ‘cross community by leading practices and providing instruction on techniques such as how to get over the barriers smoothly. Currently, he volunteers numerous hours to Celo Pacific as their webmaster, tracking and posting race results every weekend to support the team’s racing.

When not racing, Prenzlow works full time at the Hewlett Packard’s Rancho Bernardo site where he is a technical software engineer. He rides to work and back as part of his training or his wife, Gail, drops him off, then he rides home. It’s a hilly 25 mile commute one way.

“I cannot believe I made it to 100,” says Prenzlow. Neither can we, but the official results speak for themselves (see his plamares here). When asked about the beach course on Sunday, he says “I enjoy racing in the deep sand and creating challenging courses”.John Behrens, co-founder of Bailey Bikes and a previous teammate of Brent’s with Celo, adds that the man who raced in red booties is a mentor to everyone in ‘cross. Through Prenzlow’s leadership and providing tips in travel, training, and racing, Behrens, who lines up at the start with Brent, has advanced categories in cyclocross to the elite level. “Brent keeps on getting faster and faster,” says John. “He is efficient and smooth over and over again.”

Race announcer Larry Longo says Prenzlow is truly gifted because “nobody wins 100 elite races.”
Future dreams of the “King of Cross” as some call him, include standing on the highest podium at the December Cyclocross Nationals in Bend, Oregon for the highly competitive 40-44 age category and plans for pro mountain bike racing locally in the NORBA series. He hopes to race the new Specialized 29er mountain bike for Celo and B+L. Maybe he will complete a double century-the next 100 in the dirt on a mountain bike? Stay tuned.

Celo Pacific's own ace cyclocrosser, Brent Prenzlow, has 99 ELITE level cyclocross wins (does not include Masters or other races prior to reaching the Elite level). He will compete this Sunday at Storm the Beach, his "home" course, with the opportunity to reach the 100 Elite win milestone.

I want to take this opportunity to mention something just as remarkable about Brent, who as many of you know, is a relatively soft-spoken, humble guy. The time & energy he spends unselfishly volunteering for the club is off the charts. From website design and updates, building our cross courses, bringing in sponsors, to mentoring our amateur racers, he gives up countless hours of time he otherwise could be out doing something else...like training!

It's been pretty busy around the shop lately. Lots of groupo upgrades, new bike builds and complete overhauls.

My night ride has started up as well. The last couple have had 7 or so riders which is still healthy, can't wait for another 14 riders. I've been toying with the idea of moving this blog to my website (Probikesupport).

Mary is racing the Tour Divide again this year!

Remember my links to the "Blue Dot"? Yes? No? Well my friend Mary raced the Tour Divide last year and was being tracked by a GPS based tracker called Spot. It was a really cool feature and it was nice to be able to see where she was on course.

The Tour Divide race is a 2770 mile self supported MTB race from Banff Canada to Antelope Wells New Mexico. Mary raced her first ever Tour Divide last year and was the first female to ever finish. 18 riders started the race and only 8 finished. Last year it took her 29 days to finish the race and that was impressive. She has learned a lot from last year and knows a little about what to expect.

It's going to take quite a bit to race this year (Money & Support). If you would like to contribute to her goals she is accepting checks or paypal at; Mary's Tour Divide 2009

My legs feel less like dead weights today.

Last week marked my first full week back on the bike. I need some type of motivation to get back out there, a new paint job and groupo are working.

Monday and Tuesday last week I commuted to work via Carlsbad (I rode north to Carlsbad then turned around, for some extra miles). Wednesday I had my Night Ride that was a little faster than I had in my legs. Thursday I had an easy paced 20 miles before work. Friday I rode with DB, Bigos & Sean. Saturday was supposed to be my rest day but, I had previously volunteered to ride a spin bike at the annual YMCA Spinathon (This year I got away with only 2 hours on the bike). Sunday I rode an easy 30 miles with Karen. Today thankfully I drove to work. I'm glad I rested the legs. They were starting to feel sore.

Looks like January is the month of Recalls....

Giant Bicycles recalled their 09 TCR frames and bicycles for faulty carbon steerer tubes.
The FDA recalled most products made with peanuts including the popular Peanut Butter Clif Bar.
Isaac Bicycles is now recalling all of their frames and bikes that were sold between 2004 and 2009. The steerer tubes are cracking.

If you have any friends still using any of these items, warn them immediately.

Did you get a gift that is a little out of the ordinary? (Tell me).

I have been asking friends and family what strange gift they have received (Doesn't have to be this year). Here are my findings so far;

1) A tap dance kit (received by a 200lb man)

2) A paper guillotine (received by a hair dresser)

3) A brand new paver brick from Mom

I don't want to hear about the LCD tv's or the Wii's. I want to see the odd gifts.

Needless to say the past couple weeks have been hard....Heck it's been a difficult year. First I had a flu for over 3 months, I ran into some financial difficulties....

Then my Mom passed away. Those of you, and you know who you are, know the back story. It has been really hard. Hard to realize I can't call or email her, Hard to think about being happy again, Hard to imagine her not being there if I needed to talk. I miss her.

(that is from my sister's wedding, I was an extremely bad usher)

This week I have been dealing with an allergy attack. It's not the flu or the cold, believe me it's different. I still feel rundown though. I even stood on the sidelines tonight while friends raced go-carts at K1 Speed.

I am feeling better everyday. I hope to be riding again next week. I need to get back in the groove, soon.

I smell like smoke and my face feels sunburned. That was fun.

The Englishman turns 41 tomorrow so we celebrated today down at Moonlight Beach. Daggs, The Fitz's, Wallace and the rest of the crew met down at the beach for a fire to celebrate 2 birthdays. Old Brett and Sean clearly had dipped into the Vodka well before the meeting time. Fun was had by all, except my washing machine and hamper.

FIRST ANNUAL CAMPAGNOLO TOY DRIVE AND CHRISTMAS BIKE RIDE

"Mark your calendars for Saturday December 13, 2008 at 8:00am; this will be the kickoff of Campagnolo first annual Toy Drive and Christmas Bike Ride.
The ride will leave from the Campagnolo offices in Carlsbad ( CA) - 5431 Avenida Encinas, Suite C - at around 10:00am and we will head out for a nice ride on the coast; approximately 30 miles.
We will have some breakfast food and drink to fuel you for the ride.

It is not necessary to pre-register.

We ask you to bring a new unwrapped toy for children infant to 17 yrs of age. The toys will be donated to Children's Hospital of SD and Voices for Children- SD Chapter; these are two very deserving charities.

Every once and awhile I miss home....

Sometimes it's family, sometimes it's friends and sometimes it's the lifestyle. I recently saw an episode of "Thre Sheets" in which they traveled to Louisville to find out the difference between bourbon and whiskey.

"All bourbon is whiskey but, not all whisky is bourbon."

Wikipedia offers a pretty good description but, I explain that bourbon has to be atleast 51% corn. Anyway during the show the host visits a new restaurant in town called "Bourbons Bistro", From the look of their 2 page Bourbon list I might need to make a trip to the 'Ville sooner than later. They offer 3 versions of my favorite bourbon of all time, Pappy Van Winkle. I have had the fortunate luck to have owned a bottle of 15yr, 18yr and 20yr Pappy. I am nursing a bottle of 18 right now. I will cry audibly when the last drop is poured into my glass (i'll keep the bottle in memory).

"There are no bad bourbons, just better bourbons."

If anyone finds a bottle of Pappy let me know. I need to prepare for the inevitable.

Project GT is finished!

I took it out for it's shakedown ride this afternoon. Wow it's different. It is exactly as I remembered it back in 1992 but, different. The top tubes back then were short and flat. The wheelbase was long and the headtube is short. I love it!

Here is a look at a day off for me.....

Get up around 8:30 and do a load of laundry. Get dressed and ride for an hour or so. Drive down to Pannikin. Walking up I noticed a couple guys wearing Slipstream jerseys but, assumed they were "posers" like all the Lance Armstrong's riding the coast on their Klein's. Then I see this.....

2 Team issue Slipstream/ Garmin Felts complete with Argyle Zipps and custom Garmin 705's. Oooops.

I drank my iced mocha under the shade. When they got up to leave I asked them if they were training. No, they rode 600 miles with the CAF Million dollar challenge. I introduced myself to one of the guys who looked familiar. It was Danny Pate! He was a cool guy, willing to talk to a bike geek like me. I dropped a few names and talked about the ride down. Slipstream is definitely one of my top teams, especially now.

Even though it was my day off I decided to drive down to the CAF expo and help at the booth. The expo was packed as usual. I ran into a bunch of friends and clients. Sarah Reinertson was at her booth the "Sarah Bear". Dick and Carlene Lansing from Chicago flew in for the ride. Mark from Ramona borrowed OMR's bike and did the bike leg. Etc. Sonja from Zoot/ Zipp/ SRAM worked our booth. She was selling wetsuits, shoes and compression for us. Problem is the first 3 hours we were told we weren't allowed to sell. Huh? It was worked out.

I walked around and headed to the SockGuy booth. The usual suspects were there. Foley was upset that I had a beer and he was empty handed. He immediately sent one of his lackeys to the liquor store. I think the miss me....

Bigos and I helped Sonja pack the gear and we headed back to Solana. At the shop I met M&M and we decided to go to Pizza Port for dinner. It was M&M, Sonja, Me and DB (Douche Bag for short). After dinner I headed to CVS to get a card for my nephews birthday and then stopped by M&M's house to help setup Mark's new PS3 and Rock Band. I laughed at them for awhile and then came home.

It was a full day.

The "Art of Cross" race this weekend was a huge success! They reported record numbers in attendance, Congrats Guys. In the Cat 4 race, they had over 60 racers and in Cat 3/4 they had around 75. That's major in a SoCal Cross race.

Matt Breyer took his first win of the season. If he doesn't watch out he'll be moving up to Elite 1/2/3 soon. Ben (CeloPacific) got second in his race. It was his first race on a cross bike. Everett (Adam's Avenue) made an appearance on a geared Gunnar. Why is this news worthy? E is a award winning SSer, I guess he wants a new challenge. Mike Telega (Oakley/ Cal Giant) came in 4th in the Cat 1/2/3 race, his first race in 3-4 years. Brent Prenzlow made the first race of the season look easy, he took the win in the Elite Cat 1/2/3 race. Congrats Guys!

Jay comes to King after 17 years at SyCip Designs in Santa Rosa, California where, along with his brother and business partner Jeremy, he became a fixture in the modern frame-building community. Noted for his creative design style and elegant fabrications, Jay is a graduate of the Art Center of Pasadena.

Good golly it's been a long time.

Lot's of stuff goin on. Here is the abbreviated summary;

1) Cinnamon Star and I drove up to Nor Cal for the SSWC08 race. We rode China Camp State Park a few times, 1 of us rode 40% of the race course and we ate some really great food (GoFish & Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen). Hands down the best food I have ever had yet. When you go to Cindy's ask Fran (the bartender) to make you a Mint Julep.

2) On the drive home I got a call, I won the Carver 96er frame they were raffling at the race! My frame is on the way. Thanks Tex!

3) I got home, parked the car and started riding the beach cruiser to work. Last Friday I went out to my car to get my floor pump.....I saw something shiny on my front tire...... The tread was coming off! CS and I dodged 4 really scary bullets (especially driving down the grapevine). I haven't driven my car in a week, I have to admit I miss it.

4) My new Toyo's are getting installed Friday. Can't wait! I need to run a bunch of errands that I can't do comfortably by bike.

I was using a couple new products on the trip and I would like to mention a few of them.

a) Hammer Heed "Subtle Melon", If you like cantaloupe or honeydew melon try it! It's really good. Not too sweet not too sugary. It worked extremely well all during the rides. I used 2.5 scoops for a large bottle. ($17.95 for 30ish servings)

b) 2009 Specialized S-Works MTB Shoe, I was hesitant at first to wear a shoe with fishing line but, the are amazing. The fit, feel and function are top notch. Not to mention I got the highly anticipated White version. I have 1 of 10 pairs in the country. ($285.00 should be available by the end of September)

c) BROOKS B190 saddle, Hands down the best beach cruiser saddle on the planet. It looks perfect on my Electra plus it's really plush. I rode it in this years Midnight Madness and have been commuting on it for a couple weeks. ($175.00 only available in black)

Yep Cinnamon Star and I are headed up to Napa for the SSWC next Thursday for 5 days. We lucked out and we were invited to stay with CS's brother and sister in laws house. We might even eat at one of their eateries. They both work in the Food Industry in Napa. Hey I like food!

As far as the race goes, I would love to say we are racing. And if I said that , yes we both would rock the clydesdale class. And yes I do outweigh CS by 20 pounds and 3 inches shorter. Alas we are not racing. We are going up to ride the course. I am also looking forward to catching up with the SyCip brothers and misc friends that will be up there. It should be a blast and stories will follow....

A couple new things have been added to the fleet....

I got my Brooks B190 installed on the beach cruiser, Wow. It is leaps and bounds better than the stock saddle. It better be it weighs a little over 4 pounds.

My GT Zaskar frame came in as well. It's a 1992, ball burnished with the XT U-brake. I am still gathering the parts. If anyone knows of a decent 1993- 1994 Shimano XTR M900 or M910 front derailleur in bottom pull 31.8 clamp, let me know.

I'm stoked! This was one of those memorable frames that I should never have sold. It was back when I would sell the old to pay for the new..... I haven't done that in awhile. I have a semi-complete Shimano M900/ M910 XTR group that is going onto this frame. Can't wait!

The other 2 are more rare and likewise will be harder to track down.

1) A 1992- 1993 Klein Attitude (Green to White to Pink, I called it Aquafresh)

2) A 1994- 1995 GT Xizang (Polished Titanium)

Well it's crunch time.

I am moving my workbench and tools on Sunday and the rest on Tuesday (hopefully...). I have been organizing, shredding, trashing and packing for the past 3 weeks getting ready. I'll post some pics when I get there. The move is not geographically huge (Leucadia to Cardiff) but, I have been in the sam house for over 5 years now. It's time.

I ran a bunch of errands today. I heard there might be a Red Mango opening up next to Seaside Market. I drove past and it was Open! Since I am on my "nutrition adjustment" desserts have been scarce. The yogurt at Red Mango is awesome. It's really low in calories, no fat and has some protein plus you can add toppings. My favorites are cranberries, almonds and cocoa puffs. Try it out.

I am going to make a bold statement...

After watching the Giro on tv or reading the live coverage on cyclingnews, I am not looking forward to the TdF. The Giro had some great stages. There weren't many if any scandals. No reports of doping, etc. The TdF has become a farce, a soap opera if you will. Don't get me wrong I'll check the reports every once and awhile but, I think I am over it.

Anyone else getting that sour taste in your mouth? It's garlic covered frites.

I am afraid to admit this on an open forum but,.....

I am really enjoying catching up with old friends on Facebook. It's not nearly as slimy as myspace but still. It's easier to chat and catch up with friends, you should check it out.

The shop has been slammed lately, thank god. I love it when it is busy and we are overbooked, I have my work cut out for me. We have been receiving loads of new product including new bikes which helps.

I worked the Encinitas Century again this year. This time I was in the WRX and JRowe was in the B&L truck. This year seemed to have more amateur cyclists than last year if you know what I mean. Either way I had fun, it's great to help people complete a goal. Lots of flats, a couple weird repairs (including duct taping someones sole to her shoe) and really hot temps.

If you haven't heard through the grapevine... I am moving to a new apartment soon. I am really excited for a change in scenery. I never really wanted the cottage I live in, it just worked out best at the time. The new place is in Cardiff-by-the-Sea (west of the 5) and has an ocean view if you stand on your toes. Plus it has a garage that I have needed badly for awhile.

****UPDATE****

I forgot to mention that I will be living next to the coolest guy in California. Not to mention his friendship was instrumental in me getting the apartment.

What's the issue with this picture?

I somehow came into contact with something I am allergic to. For the past 6 days I have had itchy, burning red eyes. It was pretty bad Monday & Tuesday, I stayed home from work. Thanks to Zyrtec and Allergan Eye drops I'm beginning to feel like myself again.

I stopped by Squadra to fix Doughboy's BB creak. After repacking the BB, Thile and I noticed the above mentioned "issue". Always check your mechanics paperwork, make sure he is proficient in all bicycles. Dough brought in some Teriyaki from Surf Brothers. It was tasty. There is one in Encinitas, I'll have to try it out.

Last Friday Geri, TeeBag and I rode Lake Hodges. Too most that doesn't mean much to me it means a lot.

It was my first MTB ride of 2008. The flu, food poisoning and various other sicknesses kept me from riding my bike. I am glad I waited, if I had gotten sicker it could have been worse. Needless to say my tired old legs were out of shape. Plus it was blazing hot out there (90 degrees). I told the guys it was going to be a slow ride but, they had other thoughts. I decided to explore.

I rode out to a trail near the boat docks that I hadn't ridden in 10 years or so. Last time I had been out there my buddies and I got stranded after night fall and had to be rescued by a passing boat. Luckily for T and G, I didn't relay that story as we adventured down the trail. The beginning was tight singletrack followed by some treacherous off camber. Around the bend was a burned out Nissan Pathfinder (I can't remember if it was there the last time). The trail became a little more loose than I remembered and turned uphill. Geri began to huff and puff. TeeBag was blazing a trail for us and I was sweating my ass off (literally).

The views were spectacular, the trail was superb (other than some hike-a-bike sections and the day was exactly how I envisioned it. Geri ended up turning around early but, TeeBag and I headed east to the 15. Most of the trails are closed but, we rode as many as we could before I started bonking. BTW the new Powerbar Fruit Smoothie bars are really tasty.

I don't know whether I have rekindled my love of MTBing or not but, I can say it was a great day.

I'm jealous....

JRowe asked me to work the Redlands Classic with him. To most that doesn't sound too strange. JRowe volunteers for the Mavic Neutral Support Crew (SSC) and he needed a jumper (someone who jumps from a car to change out a wheel for a racer) to help out. I'm in!

I drove up Thursday afternoon and met the team at the hotel before dinner. It's amazing how such different people can come together and make a solid team. Most of the guys are shop mechanics hailing from St. Louis to NorCal.

Who hasn't noticed the yellow cars and moto's in large pro races. Take a look at some of the photos on Velonews or CyclingNews, you'll see yellow. Although unfortunately I didn't have to get out of the car I was stoked to see the race from that vantage point, the radios, the commraderie between cars and closeup view of the racers.

The Del Mar Crit was last Saturday. I kind of wish there had been more this year. Saturday's race was epic though. My day started at 7:00am, setting up the tent and my pit.

The first few races were junior races and they were pretty harmless (a few flats, a derailleur adjustment, etc.). Lots of friends stopped by throughout the day which is always good. Stubby and Vanilla stopped by during their ride. Chris Allen from Specialized, BigAss stopped by after the Swami's ride, TeeBag hung out with his camera most of the day and loads of our team riders (DeWalt, SDBC and Jensifer) hung out in the pit between races.

During the 45+ race one of the UCCyclery racers wrecked pretty hard. He was taken to the hospital. Unfortunately the ambulance had to return before the next race could commence. That left the 35+ riders to warm up on course for close to 45 minutes until the ambulance returned. 5pence flew in from Jersey (the island off UK) a couple days before and decided to do the race. In spectacular form he pulled a fourth place finish. Good job little man

The Pro 1/2/3 race included a few Rock Racing guys, Jelly Belly and Toyota United. A Team Type 1 guy came into the pits looking for a neutral wheel, the pits are wheels in/ wheels out (riders bring a spare set of wheels to me, if they get a flat on course they ride to the pit and I change wheels for them). How can a pro show up at a race and not have a spare? It turned out he had his wheels at his car he just didn't want to use them. One of the Toyota United guys rolled in with a flat, also no spare. I offered him my trusty crappy 9spd spare. He was in the break so he took it. I rolled him back in and he stayed with the break. As soon as he was off I decided to fix his flat, it was a good thing he was back after 10 laps or so. I installed his wheel and rolled him in. He ended up getting third!

I was completely surprised when he came by the pit after the race and thanked me for the help. That completely made my day.

It was a long day but, a good one.

Good God how long has it been.....

Wow the shop is kicking right now. Saturday I had a line out the door waiting for yours truly to work on their bikes plus we had 7 or so scheduled repairs to do. Tis the season!

So I was rocking my "Evil" T-shirt today. M&M, The Queen and I are sitting at the Tide and a bunch of people are staring at me. You'd think I would be used to it now that I am famous but, it was kind of wierd. I realized they were noticing my shirt. It's kind of funny people treat me differently when I wear anything that says "Evil". They are just jealous.

I am getting back on the bike tomorrow. I haven't decided which bike though, maybe the Javaboy. We'll see if some exercise will cure me.

The Queen of Neoprene and I drove up to Solvang for the Tour of California.

I love road trips. Whether they are day trips or week long trips I am in. The Queen and I left after work on Thursday night. We drove up the Belmont Shores to stay at her friends house. On the way The Queen introduced me to Pinkberry.

I normally don't like frozen yogurt but, it was excellent! Too bad the closest one to San Diego is in Temecula. In the morning we left early enough to miss most of the traffic and made it to Solvang an hour before the Time Trial started. The atmosphere at the ToC races is pretty unique. It's not the spectators you would expect to see. Groups of kids, dogs and families milling about. There was the usual smattering of bike geeks, shop geeks and industry people. The race was fun to watch but, the best part for me was walking through the team areas. They had grouped the teams in a large parking lot and it was opened to the public. Thankfully not everyone knew it and it wasn't packed. We were able to stand 3 feet from Boonen, Bettini, Hincapie and everyone else while they were warming up on trainers. All the racers we saw were happy to talk to the fans and sign autographs.

The sickness has passed..... for now.

Two weeks ago most of San Diego and I caught the flu. The strain was impervious to most medication and is still lingering with me in form of a cough. I hate being sick. Most of the time when I get a cold, it lasts a few days then withers away, not this time. I missed 4 days of work and many times thought overdosing on Mucinex might be better. It took a little over 7 days to get my energy back. I am not yet up to riding but, soon.

Well do the math. I did not go to 24 hours in the Old Pueblo this year. It's the first time in 7 years that I missed it. Although I wouldn't go straight to "missed". The forecast had snow, rain and cold temps. With my flu condition there was no way I was going to risk a pneumonia. It looks like it was a good decision. The guys were held up getting out of town because of black ice, snow and mud slides on the 8 east. When they arrived in Tucson it was snowing and cold. Yuck.

At least it let up for the race. Unfortunately the weather was the only good change during the first lap. Elliott went first for the guys. On his way out the fire road toward the first climb, a jackass nudged his handlebar and he flipped over the bars breaking his collarbone and fracturing his elbow. Poor SOB. Jens turned 40 last night (at least thats what are waitress thought)!

Great turn out for another Jens slam-fest, sorry buddy. Dainty, RL.com + his better half, Kaiser, Tracy the neighbor, Mike &J, Aaron & Heather, Mattallica, BigAss, The Sheppard, Me and Tater Tot celebrated Jens' birthday at Masuo's.

Fun was had by all, at little strange and confusing but, fun.

Well.... where to begin. Here is a synopsis;

1) Had a nightmare date last week. She might have been an axe murderer but, I escaped narrowly. (Long story)

2) I started working out again to get back some fitness. I rode in the YMCA Spin-a-thon again this year and had my ass handed to me, I am still sore. I rode my bike Saturday, Sunday and Monday (I think I am riding to work today as well).

3) The Queen of Neoprene and I went to 4 Super Bowl parties on Sunday. I ended up back at #1 (The bearded ladies house) for beer pong spectating.

4) My new MTB cranks should be in this week! With Old Pueblo so soon, it might Tucson where I try them out.

Just my luck. As soon as I start feeling the urge to ride...It starts to rain and I get a cold.

Today was eventful to say the least. I was able to hammer out all the repairs for today, start a big one for tomorrow (Complete overhaul including new parts), Specialized calls to tell us that they are hooking Geri up with a new frame (Huge upgrade, pictures tomorrow) and I made it the entire day without coughing. Yay.

I am really lucky to have a kick ass job, a million friends (I think that is a literal number, everywhere I go I know someone) and a clean house. I have been noticing that I am happier than I have been in awhile. Oh well...I 'm sure things will change.

Whenever I turn on the iPod or iTunes lately I go directly to this band. I probably will play it so often that I get sick of it (like TV on the radio, etc. DB puts that band on repeat all day. ugh.). Have any guesses who it is?

Wednesday's night ride was a success! The 6 of us explored Lake Hodges and found that the "upper" trails are still closed and the Highland Valley Trail is closed as well. It still was a blast.

This photo was taken during the day but, you can tell the trails are coming back.

This weekend Jensifer and I are cruising up to Vail Lake for another 12 Hours of Temecula. This is the cold one. I have to remember to bring every piece of warm clothing I own. Tommy T is also racing this one. It will be his first solo 12 hour race. Luckily he has the mental power, we'll see if he has the leg power. Good luck Tommy!

Can You guess where this is on the trail? Looks different huh....

Now that Lake Hodges has reopened I want to start my night ride up again! Normal loop although the first ride will probably be slow and investigative. Supposedly it looks like moonscape. I hope you all try and make it out. The past rides were a lot of fun for everyone. Some of you I know are training for some endurance races and this would be a great way to train for them.

Just when things were looking up....

Reality smacks me in the face and says "not so fast". Thursday I was working in the shop when someone came in and said, those in famous words, "Does anybody own the black Subaru?". Ugh. I start to sweat, my heartbeat starts to race and I feel sick. My car is important in my life. It's not as important as when I worked in the OC but, still pretty important.

At least the guy came in right? He could have left and I would have never known there was a giant dent in my fender....Yuck. The positives are that the dent isn't blocking the wheel, so I can drive it. The headlight isn't cracked and the guy is going to take care of it. I got a couple estimates and recommendations. My mechanic Niko at Charlie's Foreign Car recommended Fender Mender in Encinitas. They seem to get a lot of business. Several dealer tech's were dropping off cars while I was there, good sign.

So I have that going for me. My first Mac class is next Sunday. I am learning a lot just playing with the computer but, I want to find out the in's and out's of the OS.

That's it for now. I am going on week 5 without cable. I have made a considerable dent in the cleaning of my house. Maybe I can invite people over soon.....

If you don't already know, I am officially a member of the Mac community. I bought my first Mac on Sunday after my laptop finally took a dirt nap. I purchased the Macbook which I am completely stoked with. It's going to take me awhile to relearn computing but, I will take that sacrifice.

I am back.... better than ever.

I have been letting y'all down. It wasn't completely my fault. Not only have I not had Internet service my crusty laptop died. Today I fixed part of the issue and bought a new computer, whew.... I finally have the computer I have always wanted and I am ready to start the next chapter.

I have been thinking about taking some computer arts classes down at MiraCosta. No time like the present. My computer will no longer hold me back. It's black just like I like my cars.

I am going to head home now and start transfering the files I managed to save on my external hard drive.

So here is the story....

First off the sickness took a lot out of me (including not riding, not working out, etc.). Too make matters worse I was becoming more lazy by the day. I decided to cancel my cable and unfortunately that included my internet. Needless to say I was lost. My house doesn't have phone lines so I can't use my modem and there aren't too many "wireless" networks in my neighborhood.

I am an internet nomad. I use my friends internet when I visit or sometimes use my neighbors connection (when I can). I'll try to post when I possible. I am working on a new connection, cross your fingers.

B&L's Holiday party is the weekend! It's always a good time. Plus I am going to a concert tomorrow night, the 94.9 Holiday Hootenany. I am looking forward to Pinback and Queens of the Stone Age. The other bands I am not quite familiar with but, should be fun.

Well.....Let's see.

Yes, I am alive. I have been battling a month long strain of Bronchitis/ Allergy sickness. It started out just like a cold then progressively got worse. Cough, Nasal Congestion, Chest Congestion. Two weeks ago I was coughing on average 40 times a day. Today I have coughed once. I might have just jinxed myself. Other than that my weeks have been normal.

I worked for Jens at the conclusion of the 12 hours of Temecula series. The race is at Vail Lake in Temecula. The series consists of 3 races on slightly different courses. Jens raced his first 12 hour race (let alone his first MTB race) here in January and won! The second race (in June-ish), after placing an awesome 11th at the 24 hours in the Old Pueblo, Jens got 2nd place! Last month's race was the hardest by far. The climbing was brutal. Jens battled back and forth between 1st and 2nd. He finished the race in 2nd and clenched 1st place (Sport) in the series! Congrats Jens, I couldn't have done it without you! (hehehehehe.....)

I have been unplugged lately.....

My normal computer is having difficulties connecting with the internet so tonight I am rocking the tablet pc. I am working on my connection and should be 100% next week. What does that mean for you? You will be able to read my blog and see updates.

Thanksgiving is coming up! Everyone have plans? I am yet again avoiding the family and spending the day with friends. I will undoubtedly see the fam during the holidays just not for Turkey Day.I should ride there just so I can burn the calories I will be taking in.

Humberto, Dainty and I stopped at The Port after work this evening. I learned 3 things;

1) 3 beers are plenty 4 beers are too much.
2) Dainty is way too sensitive when he drinks.
3) Amber Marsh likes to dance to ABBA.

I am back on the bike....sort of.

I have been taking it easy and just doing some short road rides before work. The Queen of Neoprene adjusted me the other day (Yes, she does have a chiropractic license).

Other than that things are pretty mello. The shop has stayed busy past the sale. No big drama there lately. The week is young though.

Jensypoo is racing next weekend, 12 hours of Temecula. He and Dainty rode out there last week. Dainty claims the course really difficult. I just hope the past air quality doesn't damper Jens' performance. Brent raced yesterday (Redline Cup in Boulder, CO), he finished in a strong 14th. Especially strong when he is racing against the top 20 Pro's that don't have regular jobs. He is racing again today in Colorado (Boulder Cup), both races are UCI races.

Where to begin.........

Here is a synopsis;

I wrecked my MTB three weeks ago (straight over the bars). My back has ached ever since and when I say "ached" I mean I couldn't bend without it hurting.
The next day I rode with Chicken Little, wrecked again...
Commuted to work (my back feels fine on the road).
B&L has been crazy busy.
My neighborhood was in a voluntary evacuation.
I've been house sitting in Vista which was also in voluntary evac.
The shop closed for two days because of the fires, plus Solana Beach was in mandatory evac.
My Dad and Step Mom are in town for the weekend.
Tomorrow is going to be another crazy Saturday...

My weekend includes working, dinner plans and my 6 year old nephews birthday. Busy.

I'll be back soon and fill you in with the stories... Like how my Dad doesn't know how to eat edamame.

Race #2 for the SoCal Cross series was yesterday. Brent took his 4th win of the season (2nd win for the series) in the Elite/ Pro category!

I finished his "A" bike on Friday so he was able to do a shakedown ride on Saturday and race it on Sunday. His "A" bike is an Alan Cross X. It's built with a mix of Miche, Campagnolo, Pro logo and Selcof. He is rolling on Challenge tubulars and clipped in with Crank Brothers 4ti eggbeaters.

I just finished Brent's new Alan Cyclocross "B" bike.

He raced the first SoCal Cross race of the season and Won! The race was in Fullerton, according to other racers the couse was nice but covered in thick slow grass. That didn't stop BP.

30 Haro demo bikes stolen

Hey gang, Over the weekend (9/29-9/30), the trailer and rental Penske van were broken into while parked here at Haro's Vista headquarters. About 30 used mountain bikes were stolen that were used at Interbike On Dirt Demo last week. Whatever dirt bags did this knew that there were bikes back there since the gates are locked. They also cherry picked, leaving a few single speed rigid 29ers behind.

Cyclocross is coming......

First race out here is at, for the first year, Interbike. Brent will be rocking it out there hopefully on his new bikes that I am in the process of building right now. He switched from Celo Pacific this year to Team Alan (pron. "elan").

Stellina Sport, LLC is very proud and excited to announce the new 2007-2008 Alan North America Cyclocross Team. This upstart team will be targeting as many North American UCI races as possible including the USGP of Cyclocross Series, Verge New England Series, Verge Mid-Atlantic Series, as well as the SoCal Prestige Series, and local California, Virginia, Georgia, New England, and Colorado races. Hopes are high for podium finishes at the National Championship in Kansas.

Leading the team will be Brent Prenzlow of Carlsbad, California formerly of Celo-Pacific. Brent brings a wealth of experience and results to the table and will be defending his title in the SoCal Prestige Cyclocross Series. Brent, who placed 3rd in the 2006 US Cyclocross National Championships Masters 34-39, has 68 career cyclocross wins as an elite racer and is a 6-time California State Champion. Brent will be joined by rider/team manager Tyler Johnson formerly of Richard Sachs, and CCA Kona. Tyler is a former U-23 bronze medalist at the Cyclocross National Championships in Baltimore, and has collected one UCI victory and numerous podium appearances in UCI races. Rounding out the Elite team will be NORBA standout Christian Favata, up and coming Georgia rider Jamie Pair, and a pair of strong U-23's, Virginians Jeff Buckles and Stu Louder.

Alan, whose bikes boast 20 Cyclocross World titles, will be providing the team with Pearl White Alan 12K Blade carbon monocoque frames and Xtreme DCS aluminum frames with full carbon monocoque forks. "Alan's cyclocross geometry and materials are spot on for high level cyclocross racing. Because the frames are made in 20 traditional sizes, Alan cross bikes offer virtually custom sizing." says rider/ manager Tyler Johnson. The team will be outfitting the bikes with Supertype deep section carbon wheels, Primato cranks, cassettes, and chains all from Italian manufacturer MICHE. Helping to keep the team upright and moving forward will be Challenge Grifo tires, which will be supplied in 3 different tread types to accommodate all conditions. "The Team unanimously acknowledged Challenge tires as the best tubulars for cross racing and we are very happy with the generous support and help we are receiving from the company. Their passion for the sport is fantastic", said Chris Snead, Co-Owner of Stellina Sport. Italian maker, Selcof will provide bars, stem and seatposts to trim out the cockpit, and the riders will pilot there bikes onboard Prologo Choice and Nago saddles. Clipping in and out of Crank Brothers pedals, the riders will spring over the mud and barriers in Lake Shoes and gloves. Stopping will be handled with the combo of TRP Carbon 950 brakes and top mounts, JagWire Sleek Pro Cross Lite cartridge holders and wires, and SwissStop Yellow King brake pads. Verge Sports kits will be keeping all the riders looking good and hopefully warm and dry all season. Rudy project will provide helmets and glasses to keep our heads safe and the sun and mud out of our eyes.

I think I might try and make that show.....My buddy Alan and I saw Soul Coughing at Pheonix Hill may moons ago. I need to see if he wants to meet me there.

Saturday was G.I. Nate's going away BBQ. The group had scheduled a poker game, I gave them my money as usual. I am going to miss the kid, I wish him well.

Sunday was, if nothing else, was productive. Ride in the morning, laundry in the afternoon and a ride with Indiana Jones and Santa. It started off fine but, somewhere in the middle Santa's EPO kicked in. We rode the 17 mile loop, North Hodges plus Highland Valley Trail.

Lots on my plate lately.....

Friends have been in town (5pence & June), Friend moving away (Chicken Sympathizer), The shop has been busy (2008's are rolling in) and Trying to ride. Needless to say I have been a little mental...

I met 5pence about a year ago, just before his wedding. The first time I met them I knew we would get along, especially since they live thousands of miles away (Jersey, UK). They are friends with my buddy 007. I come to find out ED knows him from way back in the day. Ironically old 5pence used to be a triathlete, funny thing is he always makes fun of triathletes.... He even had an afro and wore a Speedo. Just what he didn't need, for me to have some ammo, I love it.

The Chicken Sympathizer organized a cruise downtown on Sunday. I met up with them at Adams Avenue Bikes. There were about 20 riders and we rode down to Sea Port Village and then up to Balboa Park. Good times. We finished the ride at the shop to have breakfast. I then drove back to Encinitas, or as I like to call it "Civilization", to cruise with The Colonel and The Legs.
We have built a bunch of 08 Specialized bikes this week, If you have been thinking about a new bike you should come down and check them out. Plus we received some Look 555 bikes. Not to sound too much like an advertisement but, they are a smokin deal. Full Ultegra 10spd, carbon frame, carbon fork, carbon post for $2100.

I have ridden my bike to work 3 days this week not including tomorrow. Monday instead of riding home I drove down to Jensypoo's house with Dainty. We rode our bikes to Dao Son for some really good Thai food (Chicken Sympathizer was with) and then we went to LiveWire for some refreshments. They amazingly had Oaked Arrogant Bastard on tap, sweet.

That's it for now. Interbike is in two weeks, Poker on Saturday, Sunday MTB ride it's non-stop for awhile.

Labor Day weekend is over....In a couple ways I am glad.

Friday was excellent just as any day off should be. Roll out of bed, cruise to the Pannikin for some breakfast with friends, Go for a cruise with the colonel and megs, hang out on the deck and then walk to dinner with friends.

Saturday was blazing hot here on the coast. Thankfully I had to work (mostly in AC). After work Dainty, Average sized Breyer, Mitch and I walked over to Tidewater for a tasty beverage. I got the call and I was off to C'bad for dinner and amusement. The colonel and I schooled the brits at darts, the ladies came in a close second (close to third that is).

Sunday I don't know what I was thinking. I agreed to ride with a couple buddies. It was an "easy" day for them, I not looking forward to this. 60 miles in the saddle, 90 degrees and 3 fast riders do not equal fun when you are out of shape and over weight by 40 pounds. I hung in and cracked on the way back through C'bad. My eyes were bloodshot and I was dizzy from the heat. i went home after getting a smoothie and passed out at home for 2 hours. BTW if you are ever invited to ride with Hubert, don't believe he hype. He is not a slow rider.

I few of us met at Stone Brewery for a movie, Office Space. If you haven't heard yet Stone is playing movies on their 11 foot screen in the gardens. So far I have seen "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" and "Office Space".

I have been housesitting (more like plant and cat sitting) for the past week. I have been neglecting my updates, never fear. While nosing through the piles of REI bags, Crate and Barrel boxes and cat food containers, I found out that the Queen of Neoprene owns a computer. That's where I am right now.

The shop has been slammed lately, it's not even peak season. The other day I was at the coffee shop (go figure, right?). I heard two cyclists talking about shopping for new bikes. one of the cyclists had been by a shop in La Mesa and left disgruntled since no one spoke to him "not even Hello". The other cyclist mentioned he had heard good things about B&L. Mind you I wasn't wearing any work related or cycling related shirt. i didn't recognize either rider. While they were dicussing their upcoming visit to B&L, a "racer" heard them talking and recommended they stop by B&L. I don't know any particulars (B&L South? Did they buy a bike? etc.) but, it was great hearing positive criticism from "joe public".

I am grateful for many things; One~ I am excited to go to work everyday Two~ I have great friends/family & I appreciate every single one of them Three~ I am grateful for the life I have.

Why so philosophical? I have realized lately, I am a bad communicator. I get caught up with "now" and forget to stay in contact with family and friends. I think about them each and everyday but, never get around to calling them or even emailing them. I need to work on that. Maybe they will read this blog and understand...maybe not.

Midnight Madness has come and gone. It was quite possibly the best one yet.

It started normal enough until Cinnamon decided to try on a Tri outfit, too bad there weren't pictures......Oh wait.

12 of us met at B&L last night for a night of adventure. Cinnamon Star, Dainty, Jensifer, Tee-Bahg, The Colonel, Megs the Legs and B to name a few. As tradition we carpooled to the LiveWire on El Cajon Blvd, ordered up a few beverages and began our trek to the "ride". The group really hadn't warmed up yet and kept splitting into three distinctive groups. We regrouped at the start line and rolled into the mass. I forgot to mention Dainty had half a Chicken suit on and Tee-Bahg was Bad Santa. Ms. B and her little angels were wearing pixie wings, I on the other hand was in "Evil" uniform.
To be continued. It's blazing in my house, it doesn't help sitting with the computer.

Lutzker is officially old.

Last Saturday was Lutzker's birthday, ironically 10 years later Dainty was born on the same day. Coincidence? I think not. Both are short, balding and have bad tan lines. Doppelganger?.......

Although I have no pictures from Lutzker's bash, I do have some extremely mediocre low res photo's from Dinner with Dainty. About 20 people showed up to Masuo's for some delectable "S" (Sushi, Sapporo's and Sake).Some familar faces to the PBS blog; Jensy, Mr. Smooth (and the missus), BGaJ (If you have to ask you don't want to know), Boy Band, MattNey (pronounced Mat Knee) to name a few.

The shop is killing it right now. We have been packed the past couple weeks, not to mention today.

It's a bad picture I know but, this is the latest rendition of my Diesel (SyCip singlespeed). Most of you have heard about my trip up to NorCal to pick it up. It's been updated with disc tabs and a new powdercoat (John Deere green with gold metal flake).

I rode it last Thursday on the night ride and Sunday for a quick ride in the late morning.

Thank goodness! I can eat again and just in time. M&M's wedding was this weekend. I wouldn't be able to hold in my anger if I hadn't been able to enjoy the PCG at the reception.

Speaking of M&M, I went to the bachelor party last Thursday. Needless to say details will be withheld but, here are some highlights. The night was named "Drinking & Driving".

+We drank at the Limey's house
+We raced at K1 Speed (Carlsbad)
+We drank at Tom Giblin's.
+We drank at Coyote Bar (+added bonuses**, and a slightly intoxicated "Force"). Sorry Daggs.

I stopped drinking around midnight to sober up and drive The Fitz home. I had commandeered his phone earlier in the night since he was using it as a hockey puck. I texted "Legs" (He was fine, I was driving him home, she could go to bed, He loved her, blah, blah). I hope I one day find a girl like her. They are an awesome couple. I am really glad they are friends.

The night was definitely tame by most bachelor party standards but, was a great time.

This was my lunch today, The San Clemente pizza from Pizza Port. It's basically Taco Pizza (Mmmmm....).

Since I have been sick the last week and not really up to date on the web, I forgot to mention my trip to mecca (The SyCip factory). Chicken Little and I drove up to Santa Rosa last weekend. After battling San Fran traffic and 101 North Bay traffic, we arrived at SyCip around 4:30 (empty gas tank and empty stomach). Jeremy was waiting for us. I got to pick my decal color for my SS. I had given them artistic control of the color as long as it stayed green. Jay picked "John Deere" green with a gold nugget top coat. It's amazing! It's pearlescent in the sunlight. I looked at my options for the decals and settled on light blue. Great choice, the bike looks awesome (I even found some light blue Oury grips for accent). When we finished with the frame, we followed him to one of the local MTB spots, Annadel State Park. How many of us can say we have ridden with one of our "heroes". Jeremy has handmade all five of my frames, each and every one has a place in my heart. Unfortunately I was famished and exhausted. I was making stupid mistakes and bonking hard. Not really the condition I was hoping to be in. Jermey, CL and I headed back to town for a burger and brew. Jay SyCip stopped by to visit.

Either way it was a great trail and I can't wait to go back there and ride it again. The park boasts 30 miles of singletrack, all perfectly groomed from what I saw. Who is up for a road trip?

Saturday I woke up in Mill Valley. A little town very similar to Encinitas, Mill Valley is at the base of Mt. Tam (the birthplace of MTBing). I walked into town and found a coffee shop, Mill Valley Coffee. Around the corner was a bike shop Jeremy had recommended, Mill Valley Cycleworks. I walked in a few minutes after they opened. I had to pinch myself I thought I was in the twilight zone. The bikes, clothing, service department and fit area looked exactly like B&L. One of the sales guy reconfirmed my plans for riding a nearby park. Jay & Jeremy told us to checkout China Camp in San Rafael.

China Camp State Park is located in San Rafael and looks out over the bay. Most of the trails we rode had awesome views to the south, SF way out in the mist.
